How to Manually Update the Motorola Droid to Android 2.1

Android OS Motorola

Verizon Wireless has started rolling out with the new Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid. It is an OTA (over-the-air) update. But if you are eager to get the update sooner, then you can perform a manual update using the following instructions.

Instructions :

Things You'll Need:

  • Motorola Droid by Verizon Wireless
  • Update file - link provided below
  • Step 1
First of all, download the update file from this link: http://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip
It will be downloaded as a "zip" file. Don't extract any of the files-keep it as a compressed zip file.
  • Step 2
Rename the file as "update" (without the quotation marks)
  • Step 3
Remove the microSD card from your Motorola Droid and connect it to your computer using a memory card reader. Transfer the update.zip file to the main directory on the memory card.
  • Step 4
Turn off your Motorola Droid and insert the microSD card back into the phone.
  • Step 5
Turn on the power. Simultaneously press and hold the power button and the letter "x" on the keypad. Hold for a brief moment untill you get an exclamation mark and triangle on your screen.
  • Step 6
Once this symbol shows up, press and hold the volume up button and the camera button at the same time. If it doesn't work once, try doing it couple of more times before the bootloader screen shows up.
  • Step 7
Using the d-pad navigator on your keyboard go down to and select "sdcard:update.zip." Click enter or press the center d-pad button. The update will commence, let it complete without disruption.
  • Step 8
That is all, now you can enjoy Android 2.1 on your Motorola Droid. Try out some of the new features such as live wallpapers, pinch-to-zoom on the internet browser, 3D photo gallery, news and weather app, and the pre-installed goggles apps.

    Tips &Warnings
    • It would be advisable that you have a decent charge on your battery while performing this update. You don't want the phone to shut off in the middle of the process.
    • The file update.zip must be placed in the root directory of the microSD card (the place where all the other folders are located).
    • You can verify that the phone has been updated by going to Setttings - About Phone - Firmware Version
